Newington Girls' Swimming Claims Victory Over Rival Berlin

Going into this evening's girls's swim meet hosted at Newington, both teams were undefeated. Newington had a record of 4-0 and Berlin had a record of 3-0. Berlin and Newington have had a very competitive rivalry in girls' swimming for that past few years, with last year's meet being claimed by Berlin. This year, both coaches expected another close meet, and they weren't disappointed. The meet started with a first place finish by Newington in the 200 Medley Relay (Rocheleau, Martin, Karinian, and Gratchev), followed by a first place finish by Berlin's Kelsey Kozikowski in the 200 Freestyle. Each team traded first place finishes for the first half of the meet, with the score being tied at 55 going into the 500 yard freestyle. Newington's Carly Cruff took first in the 500 Freestyle followed by a Berlin's first place finish in the 200 Freestyle relay (Martino, DeVivo, Wajton, Chirico). Going into the last relay, Newington was ahead 88 to 84. Berlin finished with a first place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay, however Newington's 2-3 finish sealed victory with a final score of Berlin 92, Newington 94. Both teams had excellent performances, which lead to the "nail biter" finish. "I am very proud of how well the girls' swam today. I have been pushing them pretty hard in practice to prepare for this meet, and they proved they were here to win.", explained Newington's Coach John DiPaola-Tromba.
